Housing isn’t merely an investment opportunity but it is where people live

Over the last couple of weeks I have written a lot about affordable rents, about “truly affordable rents”, social rents, etc. I have mentioned social landlords, social housing, housing associations, and so on. I commented on Right to Buy and Buy to Rent, and I expressed disgust at Buy to Leave.

What I would love to see is a return to public housing, housing that is in public ownership, allocated on a temporary or permanent basis according to need, where ownership is not transferred for profit.¬†Housing isn’t merely an investment opportunity but it is where people live.

  1. Vietnam tried that sort of communism. It did not work well for them, and since the Doi Moi reform they’ve been trying to convert to a capitialist society.

Can you give any example of where government ownership of all houses has been more successful than the capitalist system?
