At the beginning of most years I am asked for my predictions for the year ahead. Last week the magazine 24housing published the predictions of the “great and the good of housing (and a few hangers on)”. I assume I was in the latter group. This is what I wrote:
“Housing and affordability will not just be an issue in the run up to the election, it will become a volcano blowing its top if mortgage interest rates rise in the autumn.
“The impact of public spending cuts on homelessness prevention services will see a huge increase in the number of rough sleepers in our town and cities.
“To counter this we need imaginative and new ways to increase supply, such as shipping container homes which BHT pioneered last year. The big housing associations no longer develop truly affordable homes for rent. Small, community-based associations could come into their own.”
