Rough sleeping, health and our cold weather shelter

How have you spent the days between Christmas and New Year’s Eve? I have spent most of it in bed with the most awful chest infection. It is particularly at times like this, when I am unwell, that I am aware of how lucky I am to have a warm home and a comfortable bed.

I can’t even imagine what it would have been like to have been so ill while living on the streets.

The last few nights have been really cold. Can you imagine what it must be like for the homeless men and women living on the streets of Brighton and Hove? I would ask you to also think about the members of staff from Brighton and Hove City Council, CRI, St. Patricks Hostel, YMCA Downslink Group, Sussex Police and BHT who have opened and staffed the cold weather shelter at BHT’s First Base Day Centre.

Through their dedication during the holiday season, they have turned out, night after night, to make sure there was dry, warm shelter for those on the streets.

I, and the City as a whole, should be immensely grateful to them for their work and commitment.
