Tomorrow (Wednesday 9th December) the Funeral Services Bill will have its first reading in Parliament. The Bill aims to tackle funeral poverty and is calling for:
- A national review of funerals and affordability
- Establish a ‘simple funeral’ service to be provided by all funeral directors
- An eligibility checker to be carried out for applicants to the Social Fund Funeral Payment.

The Bill is being brought by Emma Lewell-Buck MP and is an important step in getting MPs to talk about funeral poverty. For too long the issue has been ignored and dismissed as “not a vote winner”.
