The Funeral Services Bill is being debated tomorrow in Parliament

Tomorrow (Wednesday 9th December) the Funeral Services Bill will have its first reading in Parliament. The Bill aims to tackle funeral poverty and is calling for:

  • A national review of funerals and affordability
  • Establish a ‘simple funeral’ service to be provided by all funeral directors
  • An eligibility checker to be carried out for applicants to the Social Fund Funeral Payment.

Quaker Social Action have been campaigning on this issue for some time and I blogged about their campaign recently.

Please express your support by tweeting and using the hashtag #funeralpoverty and also follow @endfuneralpov.

The Bill is being brought by Emma Lewell-Buck MP and is an important step in getting MPs to talk about funeral poverty. For too long the issue has been ignored and dismissed as “not a vote winner”.
