Homeless People and Democracy

This year Brighton Housing Trust, with Homeless Link and the Hansard Society, held a workshop to raise awareness of the changes to voter registration so that BHT staff can support our clients and residents to register to vote.

We have the necessary forms and information (from the Electoral Service Office in Brighton and Hove City Council) at First Base for people who are street homeless to be able to register to vote.

In order to register to vote people who are homeless can give details of where they spend a “substantial part of their time” instead of an address. As First Base can be used as a “care of” address instead of a permanent address we can use our address as somewhere people spend a substantial part of their time for the purposes of electoral registration.

If you are homeless and want to register to vote, or you know someone in this situation, come to First Base.
